چکیده

The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission, during the second of its Deep Dip campaigns, made comprehensive measurements of martian thermosphere and ionosphere composition, structure, and variability at altitudes down to ~130 kilometers in the subsolar region. This altitude range contains the diffusively separated upper atmosphere just above the well-mixed atmosphere, the layer of peak extreme ultraviolet heating and primary reservoir for atmospheric escape. In situ measurements of the upper atmosphere reveal previously unmeasured populations of neutral and charged particles, the homopause altitude at approximately 130 kilometers, and an unexpected level of variability both on an orbit-to-orbit basis and within individual orbits. These observations help constrain volatile escape processes controlled by thermosphere and ionosphere structure and variability.

Changes in the thermosphere and ionosphere of Mars from Viking to MAVEN

We compare Viking and Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission (MAVEN) Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS) observations of the thermosphere and ionosphere of Mars in order to test predictions of large variations in conditions over the solar cycle and with season. Substantial differences exist between the Viking observations at solar minimum and near aphelion and the MAVEN NGIMS ...

The Aeronomy of Mars: Characterization by MAVEN of the Upper Atmosphere Reservoir That Regulates Volatile Escape

The Mars thermosphere-ionosphere-exosphere (TIE) system constitutes the atmospheric reservoir (i.e. available cold and hot planetary neutral and thermal ion species) that regulates present day escape processes from the planet. The characterization of this TIE system, including its spatial and temporal (e.g., solar cycle, seasonal, diurnal, episodic) variability is needed to determine present da...

First measurements of composition and dynamics of the Martian ionosphere by MAVEN's Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer

We report the results of the observations of the ionosphere of Mars by the Neutral Gas and IonMass Spectrometer. These observations were conducted during the first 8months of theMars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission (MAVEN). These observations revealed the spatial and temporal structures in the density distributions of 22 ions: H2 , H3 , He, O, C, CH, N, NH, O, OH, H2O , H3O , N2 /CO, ...

Water andwater ions in theMartian thermosphere / ionosphere Jane

First results from the Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer instrument on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft reveal density profiles of protonated species that are mostly in good qualitative agreement with recent models of the Martian thermosphere/ionosphere. We present here the first photochemical model in which the density profiles of water and water ions in the io...

Quasi two day wave-related variability in the background dynamics and composition of the mesosphere/thermosphere and the ionosphere

Dissipating planetary waves in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) region may cause changes in the background dynamics of that region, subsequently driving variability throughout the broader thermosphere/ionosphere system via mixing due to the induced circulation changes. We report the results of case studies examining the possibility of such coupling during the northern winter in the conte...
